Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted to seek your support for the establishment of a new legal research society, tentatively called the Australian Society of Legal Scholars. [ASLS]

A number of colleagues from a range of Australian law schools met on Thursday 7 May 2009 and endorsed a proposal to establish a society to advance legal scholarship in this country.  At this meeting it was agreed that there are many challenges facing legal scholarship arising from the current ERA Trial. There are major concerns about the proposed ERA ranking of journals. The eligibility criteria for the ERA Trial may not include a range of law materials and outputs

The meeting also agreed that, apart from the ERA Trial, there is a clear agenda for the proposed Society to encourage and promote legal research, encourage interdisciplinary research, develop awards for outstanding scholarship and research, organise conferences, advise government and universities on legal research and to develop links with similar organisations overseas.

We are modeling the Society on the highly successful Australian Society of Medical Research and the UK Society for Legal Scholars. It is envisaged that the proposed Society will work closely with the Council of Australian Law Deans (CALD), and the developing Australian Academy of Law (AAL). It will differ, however, in that the Society will have a more specific brief in relation to the promotion of legal scholarship.

We hope that you will support the establishment of an Australian Society for Legal Scholars. At this stage we hope you can send an expression of interest in joining the Society.  If there is sufficient support and interest, we will develop a constitution, membership guidelines and hold our inaugural meeting.
